Your rolls stopped reaching Roll20, Foundry or Discord, and the session starts in ten minutes. Work down this list. Most problems are solved by step three.
The short answer: when Beyond20 stops sending rolls, the cause is usually one of five things. Either D&D Beyond itself is having trouble, Beyond20 is out of date, a tab needs reloading, a setting on the VTT side doesn’t match, or another extension is fighting over the same dice. Check them in that order. Every fix below is in Beyond20’s own FAQ, which is the authority if anything here disagrees with it.
One disclosure up front: this page is written by Rollwarden, a different D&D Beyond extension. We’d still rather you got Beyond20 working. It’s good software, and plenty of tables run both.
Turn off all your extensions, or open a fresh browser profile, and roll on the character sheet. If the sheet’s own dice still fail, the problem is D&D Beyond rather than Beyond20, and no extension setting will fix it. Check D&D Beyond’s bug-report forum to see whether others are hitting the same thing.
D&D Beyond changes its pages without notice, and a change on their side can break an extension overnight. The fix usually ships as an extension update. Check your browser’s extensions page to see that you’re on the latest version, and read Beyond20’s changelog for a fix that matches your problem.
After an update, or if the browser has been open for days, reload the D&D Beyond character sheet and the Roll20 or Foundry tab. A tab opened before the extension restarted can lose its connection.
Summarised from Beyond20’s FAQ. The option names are Beyond20’s own.
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Rolls arrive as a plain purple box | The game’s character sheet should be D&D 5E by Roll20. If you’re not the DM and can’t change it, set Beyond20’s Character sheet templates option to Other templates. It looks plainer but works with any sheet. |
| Too many damage dice on a crit | Roll20’s 3D dice and Beyond20’s auto-rolled damage interact badly. Turn off one of the two: 3D dice in Roll20, or Beyond20’s auto-roll damage option. |
| HP doesn’t sync to the token | Turn on HP syncing in Beyond20, and make sure the character’s name matches exactly on both sites. The Roll20 character needs hp and hp_temp attributes (case-sensitive) linked to the token bars. Then reload the D&D Beyond sheet. |
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Nothing reaches Foundry | Foundry has to be open in the same browser as D&D Beyond. If you use the Foundry desktop app, leave it running and open your game’s address in the browser instead (http://localhost:30000 by default). |
| Works in Firefox, not in Chrome | In Chrome, click the Beyond20 icon in the address bar while you’re on the Foundry tab, every time you load or reload that page. |
| Other players see unformatted rolls | The DM needs to install and enable Beyond20’s companion module in the Foundry world. |
| HP updates the wrong token | Beyond20 matches by name, so every token with that name in the scene is updated. Give characters unique names (not “Wolf”). |
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Nothing arrives in Discord | Invite the Beyond20 bot to your server, run /secret in the channel, and paste the key into Beyond20’s options. Everyone in the group uses the same key. Don’t turn off link previews and embeds in Discord, because the bot posts rolls with them. |
| A supported feature has no option | Open the sheet’s Features & Traits tab once so Beyond20 can read your features. Character-specific options appear in the quick popup on that character’s sheet. |
| No “To Hit” on a weapon | Make sure the weapon is wielded, and roll it from the Actions tab, not the Equipment list. |
Several extensions hook into D&D Beyond’s dice, including Rollwarden. When two of them do it on the same character sheet, rolls can double up, apply the wrong bonus, or not go out at all. Neither extension is broken. They just weren’t built to share the same dice.
If rolls started misbehaving after you installed something else, turn off the other extension on D&D Beyond and test again. Rollwarden shows a one-time notice when it sees Beyond20 running alongside it, for exactly this reason.
D&D Beyond’s support team doesn’t troubleshoot third-party extensions, so report Beyond20 problems to Beyond20. Their GitHub issues page is where bugs are tracked. Search it first, because a problem caused by a D&D Beyond change usually has a thread within a day. Include your browser, your Beyond20 version and what you clicked.
Rollwarden is a free extension that also sends D&D Beyond rolls to Roll20, Foundry VTT and Discord, and adds modifier automation on the sheet. It’s a different tool rather than a drop-in replacement: it has less mileage on Foundry and doesn’t support game systems other than D&D 5e. The honest comparison covers where each one is the better choice. If you try it, turn Beyond20 off on D&D Beyond while you do.
No. Beyond20 is still maintained and open source. When it breaks, it’s almost always because D&D Beyond changed something, and fixes usually follow.
No. Beyond20 and Rollwarden are both desktop browser extensions, and mobile browsers don’t support extensions like them. If you need rolls from your phone in Discord, look at Avrae, D&D Beyond’s own Discord bot. See sending D&D Beyond rolls to Discord.
